Last month, Sotheby’s sold one of the last privately owned portraits by Sandro Botticelli from the 15th Century. “Young Man Holding a Roundel” now holds the record for an Old Masters work sold at the premier auction house. The painting was sold at a live-stream auction as a result of the pandemic that continues to interfere with large in-person events.
The seller had purchased the painting in 1982 for £810,000—about $1 million in today’s money. The painting depicts a young man holding a small circular painting known as a roundel. He is the quintessential Renaissance man.
