ALEXANDRA TYNG

Born in Rome, Italy, Alexandra Tyng was raised in a creative Philadelphia community of artists, architects and musicians. Initially, she initally chose an academic education over art school (Harvard and the University of Pennsylvania). Later, Tyng studied the work of the old masters, watched other artists paint andafter some trial and errortaught herself traditional oil painting techniques.

Tyng’s realistic portraits can be simple and direct or intricate, narrative compositions. The more complex portrait paintings contain profoundly accurate details and often place the subject in an environment with a unique perspective. The structure of Tyng’s portraits is frequently influenced by her aerial landscapes, another genre to which she is drawn. Portraits are important to Tyng who founded “Portraits for the Arts,” a philanthropic project that uses the power of portraiture to raise money for the arts.

Tyng’s portraits have earned recognition from the Portrait Society of America’s International competition, the Woodmere Art Museum (Philadelphia), the Allied Artists of America, The Philadelphia Sketch Club, American Artist and The Artist’s Magazine.

In preparation for the portrait, Tyng creates photographs, drawings and oil sketches that are the product of meetings with the subject. She gathers as much information as possible during one or two sessions where the subject is observed, studied, photographed and sketched. Then, she returns to her studio where the portrait is painted from the reference materials. While the painting is evolving, digital images keep the client up-to-date.
